Cops chase Ashraful’s fans in city

Police broke up a 'human-chain' formed by fans of cricketer Mohammad Ashraful on Sunday, reports bdnews24.com.
They were demanding 'milder punishment' for the cricketer who is on the docks after confessing to match fixing.
Witnesses said a large police contingent was deployed near the Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium ahead of the protests planned by two Facebook-based Asraful fan clubs.
More supporters began to join in small processions after 10:00am and the crowd swelled.
Many carried banners, placards, festoons with messages - 'Ashraful is our heart, don't break our heart', 'Forgive Ashraful', 'Ashraful has been framed'.
Police charged with batons before the supporters could consolidate their position and dispersed them.
Some supporters tried to gather near the main gate and gate no-4, but police chased them away.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) also took up position to back the police action.
Mirpur Police Assistant Deputy Commissioner Jashimuddin told bdnews24.com that the supporters had not been given permission for the 'human-chain'. "It is therefore illegal and they have no business to disrupt traffic. So they have been removed."
He said police came to know of the protests from media coverage and took position to avoid chaos.
However, an Ashraful-supporter told media that they asked for permission for the 'human chain' but were denied by the police, who told them there was no justification for the protests.
"They are not even allowing us to stand here (Mirpur)," he said but was not willing to be named.
ICC's Anti-Corruption Security Unit (ACSU) is investigating Mohammad Ashraful over match-fixing allegations.
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) suspended Ashraful from all forms of cricket after he confessed to involvement in match-fixing.
The board said they will take a final decision once the ACSU report is available, perheps within a week's time.
